For Small Business Saturday, a celebration of Romiley’s small businesses
One of the great joys about our neck of the woods is the number of small businesses which are on our doorstep. A short walk from Romiley Board Mill is our town centre. As well as Sainsburys Local and local banks (yes, we still have bricks and mortar branches for the time being!) there is a good number of independent retailers. This is true of Marple, a short train ride away yet an uphill walk to the centre either way. Which is why Small Business Saturday matters in Romiley and Marple.
What is Small Business Saturday?
As an alternative to the madness of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday is another US import. In the USA, it falls on the Saturday after Black Friday. In the UK, it falls on the first Saturday in December.

The main road into Romiley [Compstall Road] is where most of our town’s pubs and shops are based. It is also home to The Forum Theatre and our railway station. For Small Business Saturday, here’s a small number of locally owned businesses that are worth seeking out.
The Dab Hand Radio Workshop
Do you have an old valve radio which is doing nothing in your shed or attic? Let David Shaw restore your receiver. He can also convert your sixty-year-old Bush or Ferranti receiver to accommodate DAB and internet radio too. His workshop is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10.00am to 4.30pm (by appointment only).
Il Pepe Nero
On 51, Stockport Road, Il Pepe Nero is a restaurant and wine bar which offers the finest Italian cuisine. Everything is freshly done and the restaurant has a family friendly atmosphere. It is open from 5pm to 10.30pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays (10.00pm on Sundays).
Romiley Lifecentre
Close to the railway station on 3, Stockport Road, the Romiley Lifecentre is a social enterprise that is part of St. Chad’s Church. There are conference facilities, a bookshop and a café which offers a range of tasty treats at affordable prices. The café is open from 9.30am to 3.30pm on weekdays (till 4pm on Thursdays), and till 1.00pm on Saturdays.
Platform One
So-called owing to its proximity to the Manchester platform of Romiley station, the pub is noted for its fine food and cask conditioned ales. Formerly known as The Railway whilst a Robinsons house, it has gone from strength to strength.
J.H. Neal
On 3, The Precinct, J.H. Neal is a welcome yet rare sight on our High Streets: a proper greengrocer’s shop. They also have a sister branch in Marple.
The Local Shop for Local People
If you can avoid thinking of The League of Gentlemen television series, their unit on 22, The Precinct supports local charitable causes. Well worth a visit.
Snip and Tuck Alterations
Do you have a good outfit that isn’t fitting you as well as it should? Snip and Tuck Alterations on 9, Compstall Road can make changes to your outfit or other clothing items. Dry cleaning services are also available.
What will you be doing on Small Business Saturday?
With Christmas on the horizon, you might want to give the Trafford Centre or Merseyway a miss. Romiley’s variety of independent retailers is the envy of many parts of Greater Manchester. We at Romiley Board Mill are happy to be close to a small yet vibrant town centre. Why not enjoy the change of scenery?
