In pictures: the MV Cardboard Tube and its intrepid crew on the Cambridge raft race
Another feature of the Marple Carnival weekend was the raft race. This has historically taken place at Etherow Country Park with monies raised for charity. Local teams, including one from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, and the Marple and District Round Table have competed in past events.
For the raft race, your trusty vessel can be made of any material. A few years back, some of our staff members from Romiley Board Mill took part in a similar event in Cambridge. No prizes for guessing which materials we used. The MV Cardboard Tube lasted the pace with Captains John Johnson (Technical Director) and Julie Johnson (Office Manager) at the helm.
At the Cambridge event, all wannabe sailors compete against each other in cardboard vessels. John and Julie carried on till the end. At the finish, only a slight leak penetrated MV Cardboard Tube. Breaking up our trusty vessel could have tested Cammell Laird, let alone Romiley Board Mill. Such as the strength of our cardboard products!
