Since Sir Rowland Hill brought us the Uniform Penny Post in 1840, shipping our worldly goods have increased in complexity. Today’s mail is sorted in vast sorting offices with a network of delivery offices and Post Offices. It is sent by air and road. In the last fifty years, the Royal Mail (now privatised) has faced competition from private delivery companies. Then there’s the small matter of a rather obscure online shop (you know, the one formed by Jeff Bezos).
